Well, from my point of view you dont need to do that. But on the other hand, it also makes no sense to join a game when the person is not really interested. If he's up to it, ask him to find a mentor among the veteran players. But that would mean to also exchange messages on a regular basis for around a whole year. I'm sure someone here would not mind to take up that task for him, cause we all know that it is a benefit to all of us when the community gains another member. Maybe you could ask him and tell us?
